“Every year on or around 22 September, cities across the globe celebrate World Car-Free Day, encouraging motorists to give up their cars for a day. The event highlights the numerous benefits of going car-free to citizens—including reduced air pollution and the promotion of walking and cycling in a safer environment,” according to the United Nations Environment Programme website.

In Taguig, the World Car-Free Day will be celebrated from Sept. 22 to 25 with activities such as Bike Story Challenge and Safe Streets.

The Taguig City government encouraged the people to use sidewalks and bike lanes in Taguig, and use bicycles, skateboards, and electric scooters in going to their destinations.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Air pollution levels remain dangerously high in many parts of the world. New data from WHO shows that 9 out of 10 people breathe air containing high levels of pollutants.”

The WHO estimated that about seven million people die every year from exposure to fine particles in polluted air.

It added that ambient (outdoor) air pollution caused about 4.2 million deaths in 2016.
