Cagayan joins World Bamboo Day


The Provincial Government of Cagayan (PGC) joined the nationwide bamboo-planting activity in celebration of World Bamboo Day and Philippine Bamboo Month 2022 on Monday, Sept. 19.

Spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 2, in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), simultaneous bamboo-planting began in CENRO Lannig, Solana, Cagayan where 294 bamboo propagules were planted.

Bamboo was also planted in Liwan, Enrile; Luga, Sta. Teresita; Sisim, Penablanca; Curva, Pamplona; and Sanchez Mira, Amulung, Iguig, Gonzaga, Alcala, Abulug, Aparri, and Tuguegarao City.

DTI Region 2 Director Leah Pulido-Ocampo said that this month of September alone, 23,435 bamboo propagules have been planted in Cagayan and 33,402 in Cagayan Valley.

The provincial government supports the activity as the initiative for the sustainable development of the province of Cagayan.

Bamboo are propagated in the provincial nursery and planted on the riverbanks.

Officials here also said that bamboo-planting is a good idea in preparation for the opening of the province through the Cagayan International Gateway Project for rich countries such as China, Japan, and Korea.

"We are ever ready to support the activities, initiatives for so long it contributes to the sustainable development for the province. Everyone knows that the Governor is going to open our province to our neighbors in Asia. We have economic tigers as neighbors, even a little economic activity from them, this will change life. He wants it inclusive and sustainable," said Provincial Administrator lawyer Maria Rosario Mamba-Villaflor.
