A total of 159 ‘illegal’ electricity connections sourced from the power supply of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City have been disconnected and the electric meters were confiscated.
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor)said the operations against illegal electricity connections of houses within the NBP was ordered by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla.
During a hearing before the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights last Wednesday, Aug. 17, Remulla revealed he ordered BuCor Director General Gerald Q. Bantag to remove the illegal power connections of houses at the NBP reservation.
“Yan po ay qualified theft (That is qualified theft). Ang mga may-ari po ng bahay ay mga guwardiya po mismo ng New Bilibid Prison (The owners of the houses were found to be guards of the Bilibid),” Remulla said.
Thus, Remulla stressed the need to relocate the NBP “to break the existing culture there.”
“Matindi po ang kultura dito na namayagpag kung hindi natin ilipat ang mga tao sa isang malayong lugar ay hindi ho natin mababasag ang mga problema rito (The culture prevailing here is severe and we won’t solve the problems if we won’t move the people to someplace far,” he told the Senate.
BuCor said the “electric meters that had been confiscated were properly turned over to the Office of Electrical Engineering Section for inventory.”
