The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, Aug.17, announced that there are 21.8 million learners who have enrolled for School Year (SY) 2022-2023 set to start next week.
Based on the latest data from the Learner Information System (LIS) for SY 2022-2023, DepEd said that the number of registered students has reached a total of 21,837,853 for the incoming school year.
Of this number, 19, 233, 796 learners are enrolled in public schools; 2,531, 715 are in private schools; and 72, 342 are in State Universities and Colleges/ Local Universities and Colleges (SUCs/LUCs) that offer basic education.
Region IV-A still has the largest number of enrollees with 3,142,716 followed by Region III with 2,419,137, and the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,330,450.
Those who have yet to enroll are encouraged to register as soon as possible through three enrollment methods: in-person, remote, and dropbox enrollment.
The enrollment period started on July 25 and will end on the first day of classes on Aug. 22.
In an interview, Vice President Sara Duterte said that preparations for the school opening next week are still ongoing.
“We’re trying to arrange it with the field operations,” Duterte said when asked what school will she visit during the opening of classes.
While the exact school has not yet been identified, the DepEd Chief said that this will be in “Luzon, outside of Metro Manila.”
Meanwhile, DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa said that the data on the number of schools that will implement face-to-face classes, blended learning, and full distance learning are still coming in from various regional offices.

“In general, DepEd is very confident that we’re ready for this coming school year,” Poa told the Manila Bulletin in an interview.
During a Management Committee meeting held on Aug. 17, Poa said that all the Regional Directors “were confident that we’re ready not only to go back to school but to a certain degree, to do some face-to-face or in-person classes.”
As announced earlier, Poa said that DepEd will be allowing schools to implement alternative learning delivery modes during the transition period starting Aug. 22 to Oct. 31.
Starting Nov.2, DepEd said that in-person classes will be mandatory for all schools nationwide --- both public and private.
