The Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or-winning film features Filipino actress Dolly de Leon

After its victory at the Cannes Film Festival 2022, “Triangle of Sadness” is coming to Philippine cinemas soon. Giving Filipino cinephiles a glimpse of the film is TBA Studios as it releases the official trailer of the film.

Led by multi-awarded Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, “Triangle of Sadness” centers on fashion model couple Carl and Yaya as they go on a luxury cruise adventure. Everything was Instagram-perfect until a storm caused its passengers to have heavy seasickness. “The cruise ends catastrophically and they become stranded on a desert island with a group of billionaires and a cleaning lady. In the fight for survival, old hierarchies are turned upside down since the cleaning lady is the only one who knows how to fish,” according to its official synopsis.

Joining stars Harris Dickinson (Carl) and Charlbi Dean Kriek (Yaya) are Woody Harrelson, Vicki Berlin, Zlatko Burić, and Filipino actress Dolly de Leon as the cleaning lady.

Dolly portrays Abigail, a toilet manager on a chaotic cruise ship, and was praised for her scene-stealing performance in the dark comedy film. To do it, she based her character on her relatives and Filipino friends who are working overseas.

“I simply put myself in her shoes, because there are so many [overseas Filipino workers] in my country,” Dolly said in an interview with Variety. “I have relatives and friends who are OFWs and I know how they live, and I know them. So I know the struggle and hardship they go through, having to live in a foreign country and speak a different language they’re not used to, and having to be away from their families and do things to earn money. I just based it on that. I asked myself, ‘What if I, Dolly, was an OFW?’ That’s how I played her. A huge part of me is in Abigail.”
