4.5-magnitude earthquake rocks parts of Ilocos

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 4.5-magnitude earthquake in Ilocos Norte Monday afternoon, Aug. 15.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 10 kilometers (km) southeast of the municipality of Carasi in the province of Ilocos Norte at 4:19 p.m.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Carasi, Bacarra, Badoc, Paoay, Sarat, Dingras, Bangui, Adams, Burgos, Currimao, City of Laoag, City of Batac, Solsona, Pasuquin, Piddig and Vintar, Ilocos Norte; Bangued and Dolores, Abra; Banayoyo, Bantay, Cabugao, Caoayan, Galimuyod, Lidlidda, Magsingal, San Emilio, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Santo Domingo, Sinait and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur; and Claveria and Santa Praxedes, Cagayan.

Meanwhile, it was felt at Intensity III (weak) in Flora, Luna, Pudtol, and Santa Marcela, Apayao; and Abulug and Lasam, Cagayan.

San Nicolas and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte felt the tremor at Intensity II (slightly felt).

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
