TACLOBAN CITY – A 32-year-old soldier was stabbed to death by his drinking buddy in Calbayog City, Samar, Friday, August 12.

Police identified the victim as Private First Class Mark Dian Fuentes, assigned to the Army 19th Infantry Battalion based in Barangay Maduruto, Matuguinao, Samar.

Initial investigation disclosed that the victim and the suspect, Michael Cardinas, 36, a farmer, of Barangay Roxas II, Oquendo District, Calbayog, together with the uncle of Fuentes and a friend, were having a drinking spree in Tinambacan District when a heated argument erupted between Mark and brother Jomar.

They calmed down, but, after the victim was advised to stop drinking as he was already drunk, a fist fight ensued between him and Jomar.

Jomar pushed his brother towards Cardinas. Infuriated, the suspect grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim several times in the left chest, abdomen, stomach, and front hip.

Mark was taken by relatives to St. Camillus Hospital in Calbayog where he was declared dead by the attending physician.

Cardinas fled and a police manhunt against him is under way.
