For some time now, we have been seeing a lot of laptops that are lightweight yet pack powerful computing chips. But only a few are successful in designing an elegant and well-polished laptop in the market. This is where ASUS sets its laptop apart. What impresses me the most with ASUS’ new line of Zenbook laptops is that they look professional and cool all at the same time. A classic example of this is the new ASUS Zenbook 14X OLED UX5401ZA which looks well polished and subtly shiny giving it a low-key elegance. It is also thin, measuring only 15.9mm thick and weighing 1.4 kg. Something that for sure will not strain your shoulders or break your back while carrying it.

Its vents and ports are scattered all around the sides of the Zenbook 14X OLED. You have Type C and Type-A ports, a dedicated audio jack, an HDMI slot and a micro SD card reader that looks like an air vent. For a thin laptop, it is impressive to find various ports present in its body. Me, being a wired audio lover, my heart fluttered a bit when I saw the audio jack present. Because there’s something about wired audio that hits differently.

Its 14-inch screen, meanwhile, is a sight to behold! It boasts an amazing 16:10 2.8K UHD OLED NanoEdge display that gives realistic colour. This is also due to the fact that it is Pantone validated with cinema-grade 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut. This means that the Zenbook 14X OLED delivers highly detailed and realistic images where colours are reproduced in a  richer and more vivid manner all the time. This is advantageous not just while watching movies but also for colour-intensive projects, such as video and photo editing. And since it is OLED it maintains good colour reproduction at any brightness level. Even at night when I have to turn down the brightness level, the colour of the screen is still vibrant and you can still appreciate the colour of whatever image you are looking at.  Apart from this, its OLED display has the capability to display true black colour in its entire grandeur due to the Display HDR 500 True Black. With this, the OLED screen projects the deepest black possible and yet it can still show details as expected from an ultra high-quality screen. On top of this, its OLED screen has a 0.2 millisecond response time that ensures games will be smooth and has low-latency gameplay.

We all know that blue light from the screens of electronic devices brings visual discomfort to users and can also disrupt sleep quality. With that being said, ASUS made the Zenbook 14X OLED screen with 70% less harmful blue light. This is beneficial not just to adults but also to kids who are more susceptible to blue light as their eyes are not yet fully developed. The blue light can potentially cause premature ageing of the kid’s retina making him or her depend on eyeglasses early on.

Now for security, the power button of the Zenbook 14X OLED doubles as a fingerprint sensor for easier and more secure log-ins with Windows Hello. This guarantees that the laptop recognises you and draws up the personalisations and settings you have made on your Windows laptop immediately.

In terms of flexibility and collaboration, it can open up to 180 degrees for optimal viewing from people around. This is also useful during your “me” time at home. You know, when you are just lounging around your house finding the most relaxing position your body can contort into, you can still get the optimal viewing angle as you binge-watch your latest favourite series. The screen is also a touch screen making it easier and faster to navigate around, especially during collaborations.

And just like with any Zenbook laptop, it also features an ErgoLift hinge design that slightly lifts the Zenbook 14X OLED to give the keyboard a better angle for typing. It also gives enough space for the vents to take in air to keep the laptop’s machine cool. The ErgoLift hinge design is a welcome development in my opinion because it looks sturdier than the previous hinge designs that I have seen. It is also partnered with the ASUS IceCool thermal technology which boasts aerodynamic IceBlades for accelerated cooling. This dual-fan cooling system ensures up to 30% more flow rate to make sure that the Zenbook 14X OLED stays cool during heavy and long use.

Complementing the ErgoLift hinge design is the ErgoSense keyboard and touchpad. Despite being a small laptop, the keyboards are well spaced and keys dipped about 0.2mm making it more comfortable for fingers to press it. During the time that I have used the Zenbook 14X OLED, I never had a wrist strain that is usually synonymous with small laptops. My mistypes were also lesser as the spacing of the keys is adequate even for people who are into the  “pindot” system type of typing.

The ErgoSense touchpad is also worth noting because its texture is ultra smooth as if your fingertips are gliding on silky smooth ice, but not cold of course. It also has a special low-friction coating that ensures that fingertip strain is a thing of the past. I remember when I had my first laptop some years ago, towards the end of the day the tip of my index finger was painful due to the constant swiping and tapping of my laptop’s touchpad. This is also the reason why I never used the touchpad much up to this day. But with the ErgoSense touchpad, I have not experienced strain on my fingertip. Because of this I have been using the ErgoSense touchpad more and more and discovering more gestures to use on the touchpad. The ErgoSense touchpad also has a high-end PVD anti-fingerprint coating that keeps the touchpad looking clean and fingerprint free all the time. Also, hidden in the ErgoSense touchpad is Asus’ innovative NumberPad 2.0. This is a clever trick as it gives adequate space for the number pad when you need it and goes away afterwards.

Providing the processing power of the Zenbook 14X OLED is a 12th Gen Intel Core processor with Iris Xe integrated Intel graphics. This power pairing gives the Zenbook 14X OLED the beauty and brains of providing excellent computing power for writing and video and or graphics editing.

In summary, the ASUS Zenbook 14X OLED checks all the boxes for laptops for everyday use. Because it is lightweight, in fact, it is lighter than the coin purse I have in my everyday bag! It has the computing power and excellent OLED screen perfect for graphics-heavy work and plays with a keyboard and touchpad that are so comfortable to use it is inspiring enough to write a lot of articles!
