Centro Escolar University School of Medical Technology alumna, Dr. Ligaya Co-Picazo was appointed Head of the Quality Assurance unit under the Laboratory Research Division (LRD) of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).
The LRD consists of 10 departments with 14 operating units and 18 national reference laboratories (NRLs). As the QA unit head, Dr. Co-Picazo is responsible in ensuring that the Quality Management System is implemented at all times in terms of sample, process, occurrence, data, waste, and change management.
As she recalled the overwhelming tasks in response to Covid-19 pandemic, she said, "Being a healthcare worker and frontliner, I have witnessed and experienced the threats and consequences of COVID-19. I can say that there were lots of challenges brought about by the pandemic, which were intensified by the feeling of hopelessness due to uncertainties and risk of infection." Despite all the difficulties, her being a medical technologist and a public health servant moved her to fulfill her mission of serving her fellowmen in her own little ways, she added.
Dr. Co-Picazo is one with the RITM’s commitment to deliver and perform quality diagnostic services in terms of screening and confirmatory testing of samples which will aid in the diagnosis, prevention, control and treatment of infectious diseases of public health importance like Covid-19.
Dr. Co-Picazo obtained her Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology degree in 1988.
