‘Squid Game’ stars react to their Emmy nominations


Netflix’s “Squid Game” made history when it bagged 14 nominations at the 74th Emmy Awards that will be held on Sept. 12. 

“Squid Game” received a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, becoming the first Korean and non-English series to be nominated in the category.

It will be competing against  “Better Call Saul,” “Euphoria,” “Ozark,” “Severance,” “Stranger Things,” “Succession” and “Yellowjackets.”

“Squid Game,” released on Sept. 17 last year, tells the story of 456 debt-ridden people who join deadly children’s games to win a prize of 45.6 billion won (about $34.8 million). It is Netflix’s biggest show with 1.65 billion hours viewed in the first 28 days of release.

The stars of “Squid Game” also bagged their first-ever Emmy nominations. 

Korean actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun in the series, expressed his gratitude for the Emmy nomination.  

"First, I would like to share my sincere gratitude. It is a tremendous honor to be nominated together with these brilliant actors,” he said. 

He added, “I would like to share this honor with the Squid Game fans around the world, who showed us endless love and support, and the Squid Game team, who worked very hard to make everything possible."

The other nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series are Jason Bateman of “Ozark,” Brian Cox of “Succession,”  Bob Odenkirk of “Better,” Adam Scott of “Severance” and Jeremy Strong of “Succession.”

Lee Jung-jae previously won best actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and 27th Critics' Choice Awards for “Squid Game.”

Korean actors Park Hae-soo, who plays Cho Sang-woo, and Oh Yeong-su, who plays Oh Il-nam in “Squid Game,” have been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. 

“I'm so overwhelmed. Love you Netflix and big thank you to the Emmy Awards,” said Park Hae-soo. 

Oh Yeong-su won Best Supporting Actor-Television for “Squid Game” at the Golden Globe Awards. 

Jung Ho-yeon is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. “Squid Game” was her first acting project. 

“Thank you so much @televisionacad and the voters. A happy day,” she said. 

Lee Yoo-mi is nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series.
