Army put on a show and pulled the rug from under a traditional favorite Petro Gazz, 25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, Thursday to nail its first win in the Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.

Jovelyn Gonzaga lived up to her monicker as the “Bionic Ilonga” and unleashed a match-high 23 points she laced with 22 destructive kills to power Army to the victory that made up for their 25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20 defeat to pace-setter Cignal in the conference inaugurals Saturday.

Michelle Morente also provided a helping hand for the Army with 13 points, including 12 from attacks, while Ivy Perez chipped in 10 points.

Royse Tubino and Jeanette Villareal also contributed nine points apiece for the Lady Troopers,  who dealt the struggling Angels their second straight setback and surprisingly at the bottom.

Aiza Pontillas and Myla Pablo led Petro Gazz with 22 and 16 hits, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to stop Army from pulling the rug from under the former.
