BACOLOD CITY – Police caught 12 people in the act of engaging in illegal cockfighting or ‘tupada’ at Hacienda Napilas 2, Barangay E. Lopez, Silay City, Negros Occidental on Sunday.
The arrested individuals aged between 25 and 82 are residents of Silay City and Victorias City.
The alleged promoter of the illegal gambling activity managed to escape, according to a report from Negros Occidental police released on Tuesday.
Police recovered five wounded fighting cocks, five dead fighting cocks, two gaffs, other gambling paraphernalia, and P4,197 believed to be bet money.
‘Tupada’ is prohibited as it is normally conducted without permit. It is conducted using a makeshift arena in an open space.
Even legal cock-fightings is allowed on a limited basis due to pandemic.
The arrested persons will all be charged with violation of Presidential Decree 449 (Cockfighting).
