A police response on a vehicular accident in Tuba town of Benguet on Sunday, July 3, took an unexpected turn as it led to the confiscation of more than P1.4 million worth of marijuana.

Thanks to a nosy local resident who tipped the responding policemen that the two occupants of the vehicle, although injured, threw a box into a nearby river.

Police Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao, Jr., officer-in-charge of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the responding cops discovered the marijuana after the pick-up vehicle overturned in the middle of the road.

He identified the arrested suspects as driver Jimmsie Salazar and passenger Justine Baisa.

Both of them suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Danao said the vehicle overturned when its brake malfunctioned on a sharp curve of the road while heading towards Baguio City.

When the cops arrived in the area, a local resident told them that the two limping occupants pulled a box out the vehicle and later threw it into the river.

Upon verification, authorities discovered the box containing pieces of tubular form which turned out to be marijuana worth P1.44 million.

“It’s a good thing that we have witnesses who helped us recover the box containing illegal drugs. Now, our investigators are identifying where this came from and the destination where the items will be delivered,” said Danao.

The pieces of evidence and witnesses’ account underwent proper documentation to be used for the filing of charges against the two individuals, according to Danao.
