In one of his first major decisions since assuming the Palace seat, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has vetoed the bill seeking to build the Bulacan Airport City Special Economic Zone and Freeport.
The veto was reported on Saturday, July 2, which was Marcos’s second full day in office as the Chief Executive.
Marcos said that while he recognizes the aim of House Bill (HB) No. 7575 to accelerate local economic growth, “fiscal prudence must be exercised particularly at times when resources are scarce, and needs are abundant”.
“l cannot support the bill considering the provisions that pose substantial fiscal risks to the country and its infringement on or conflict with other agencies’ mandates and authorities,” he wrote in his veto message.
The newly-installed leader went on to cite an existing law, Republic Act (RA) No. 11534, which already allows eligible enterprises to apply for and avail of tax incentives outside economic zones by providing a favorable incentive package without creating new special economic zones.
“Subject to the review and approval of the Fiscal Incentives Review Board, tax incentives may be availed by qualified enterprises and will be enjoyed longer if investments are located in less-developed areas,” said Marcos.
Elsewhere, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that all regions in the country have already fully vaccinated over 40 percent of their respective elderly population.
“As of June 29, 2022, all regions have fully-vaccinated more than 40 percent of their A2 priority group/senior citizens,” the DOH said in a statement, citing data from the National Covid-19 Vaccination Operations Center (NVOC).
Figures from the DOH’s Covid-19 vaccination dashboard shows that there are now 70.8 million Filipinos fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as of July 1. Of the figure, 6.7 million are senior citizens.
