Marian image in Rizal granted episcopal coronation

(DIOCESE OF ANTIPOLO)

Bishop Francisco de Leon has granted the episcopal coronation of a venerated Marian image in Binangonan, Rizal, the Diocese of Antipolo said.

In a decree issued June 29 that was sent to the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles Parish, Bishop de Leon granted the canonical coronation of the revered Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, more popularly known as the Mother, Queen and Patroness of Binangonan, said a Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines News post.

Historical records show that devotion to the Marian image began in Pilapila, one of Binangonan’s lakeside villages, in 1892 when a printed image of Our Lady was caught by Teniente Ambrosio Blanco from the Laguna de Bay. At that time, the Marian image was commissioned and was enthroned in a chapel in an area overlooking the lake.

The chapel was later elevated as a parish separating it from Sta. Ursula Parish in 2013.

Devotees celebrate March 15, the day of the image’s discovery and August 2, the liturgical feast in honor of the Marian title.

The CBCP said the Marian image is the sixth to be granted an episcopal coronation in the diocese. The others include Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados (Marikina City), Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu (San Mateo, Rizal), Nuestra Señora de la Luz (Cainta, Rizal), Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario (Cardona, Rizal), and Nuestra Señora de Fatima (Marikina City).
