Veteran diplomat Luis Enrique Manalo has been named Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Manalo, 69, was appointed DFA Secretary on Friday, July 1, a day after Marcos was inaugurated as the 17th president of the Philippines.

Manalo was the Philippines’ permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) from February 2020 up until his appointment as DFA chief.

He previously served as the DFA’s undersecretary for policy from April 2016 until February 2020.

Manalo even took over as ad interim DFA secretary from March 9, 2017 to May 17, 2017.

Before that, he was ambassador of the Philippines to the United Kingdom from 2011 to 2016.

He has been with the DFA since 1979 and since then, has been awarded by the Philippine government the Order of Sikatuna ranked Grand Cross and a Gawad Mabini Grand Cross for services tendered as a foreign diplomat.

The Order of Lakandula ranked Grand Cross has also been awarded to him. It is one of the highest civilian orders in the Philippines

Manalo earned his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Economis from University of the Philippines Manila.
