EJ Obiena recognized as Outstanding Manilan In The Field Of Sports


EJ Obiena has been awarded as an Outstanding Manilan In The Field Of Sports.

Obiena was grateful for the recognition given to him during the recent awarding ceremony that his parents attended on his behalf. He is currently based in Formia, Italy where he is training.

“This award is dedicated to my fellow youths of Tondo I and II, where I came from. I hope I can inspire you all to dream, and go after your dream. Anything is possible through hard work and grit,” Obiena said.

“My roots in Manila started in Calle Azcarraga (now CM Recto Avenue) and is more than 70 years deep and I am more than happy to be recognized as one of its outstanding citizens.”

Obiena was recognized for his achievements in pole vault, where he is currently the national and Asian record holder. He is also a Tokyo Olympian and is currently ranked No. 6 in the world.

Obiena thanked local officials for the recognition and his parents for representing him in the ceremony.

“Thank you Mayor Isko Moreno, Mayor-Elect Dra. Honey Lacuna, Vice Mayor-Elect Yul Servo, Mr. Roel de Guzman of the Manila Sports Council, and to the entire officers and staff of the City of Manila. It is truly an honor. And most especially to my parents who represented me in this ceremony, I share this honor and utmost gratitude to you.”
