Spectrum, the solar solutions subsidiary of Manila Electric Company (Meralco), will install rooftop solar power system for Toyota Motors Philippines (TMP), primarily for the Japanese carmaker’s manufacturing facility in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
In a statement to the media, Spectrum indicated that the new rooftop solar power solution for TMP is comprised of 460-kilowatt peak (kWp) facility, which is an expansion of its existing 1.0-megawatt installation that went on stream in December 2018.
In Spectrum’s calculation, “the expansion project is expected to generate approximately 625,700 kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean energy per year, translating to an estimated annual savings in energy costs amounting to P3.5 million.”
As an anchor to the decarbonization and sustainability journey of Toyota, the solar power solution would reduce the companies carbon emissions by 446 metric tons, equivalent to more than 45,000 trees planted or 1,775,148 kilometers cutback in vehicle travels on an annual basis.
According to Spectrum, the first rooftop solar venture of TMP already warranted it to use 4,753,561.58 kWh of clean energy since it kicked off commercial operations and energy cost savings of P31.6 million in the firm’s electric bills.
With the expanded facility, the Meralco subsidiary firm qualified that “these solar projects powered by Spectrum enable Toyota Philippines to contribute to parent company Toyota Motor Corporation’s global goal of making its manufacturing plants carbon-neutral by 2035.”
TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto narrated that the “TMP solar project team, Meralco, and Spectrum have been doing for several months to complete this expansion project and achieve full operation.” And with the completion of the installation, he asserted that “for TMP, I am confident to say that ‘Plant Carbon Neutrality’ by 2035 is possible.”
He expounded that on an all-inclusive basis, “through stronger collaboration within the Toyota network, we will continue to work hand-in-hand with our stakeholders to achieve Plant Carbon Neutrality and our Toyota Environmental Challenge (TEC) 2050 targets.”
Okamoto further stated “our global vision may be ambitious, but we will continue to challenge ourselves to ‘move our world’ by creating a net positive impact and a more sustainable society for future generations.”
For the Meralco firm as Toyota’s partner to its sustainability goal, Spectrum COO Patrick Henry Panlilio asserted that their company will continue to support the Japanese firm on its deployment of clean energy solutions.
“We have been in partnership with Toyota since 2018 and now, we are celebrating a huge milestone with the expansion of their original solar array. With this, the clean energy that TMP will generate will increase by approximately 16-percent per annum,” he said.
Panlilio highlighted that “Toyota’s global goal of making its manufacturing plants carbon-neutral by 2035 is fully supported by Spectrum. Now, more than ever, incorporating alternative sources of energy is one of the best ways to save in electricity costs and increase operational efficiencies.”
