Bautista is best-known as the former president of the Philippine Airlines (PAL). He retired from the flag-carrier in 2019.

Bautista has a long and storied career in PAL: he worked his way to vice president (VP) for finance from 1993 to 1994, chief finance officer from 1994 to 1999, executive VP from 1999 to 2004, and president from 2004 to 2012. He retired for two years but came back as president in 2014 until 2019.

He has held executive positions and directorships under the Lucio Tan Group of companies, which is headed by its namesake-billionaire.

A CPA, he graduated magna cum laude from Colegio de San Juan De Letran in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce, and a major in Accounting.

In 2018, the Central Luzon State University awarded Bautista a Doctorate in Humanities Honoris Causa (Honorary degree).

As the incoming transport secretary, Bautista will lead the DOTr in maintaining, expanding, and improving the country’s transportation systems, as well as addressing the country’s transport crisis.
