MOVIEGOER: Songs flown to the moon

Luis Manzano

“Fly Me to the moon” won’t be just a popular line from a vintage hit song. Written by Bart Howard in 1954 as a slow waltz, with the title “In Other Words”, it was first recorded by Kaye Ballard, but it wasn’t until  Frank Sinatra sang it in 1964 on vinyl that it became such a massive, global hit.

Now, the world is literally flying in a few songs to the moon next year, hear ye!

And taking part in the collection of songs to be flown to the moon are several Filipino singers.

Among others, Angela Ken, BGYO, and BINI get to preserve some of their songs through The Lunar Codex time capsules to be launched to the Moon’s Lunar South Pole in the fall of 2023 as a ‘message-in-a-bottle’ to the future.

They are among Filipino artists whose works will be part of The Lunar Codex, an archive of art, literature, music, and film bound for the Moon that uses both digital and analog technology to preserve contemporary works for future generations to discover.

Included in the list of moon-bound songs are massive hits from ABS-CBN’s Star Music, including Angela Ken’s self-love anthem, “Ako Naman Muna.”

P-pop sibling groups BGYO and BINI also have their share of hit songs to be flown to the Moon.

These songs will comprise The Lunar Codex’s Polaris Collection, to include award-winning compositions from all over the world.

Also part of the Lunar Codex are works of the Apo and Gary Valenciano.

But, why isn’t that monumental hit song by Juan Karlos Labajo—-Buwan—-not counted in the parcel? I think even the moon shall be flattered, listening to a song extolling its greatness.

What about going back in time and flying in also O, Maliwanag na Buwan by Pilita Corrales?
