Wounded fugitive arrested in Calauan dragnet

LAGUNA – The Calauan Philippine National Police arrested a fugitive in Calauan town on Sunday, June 13, 25 days after he escaped from the Laguna provincial jail.

Laguna Police provincial director Colonel Cecilio Ison Jr. identified the prisoner as Eddie Bongon, 32, of barangay Inayapan, Sta. Maria, Laguna.

Bongon was arrested at Brgy. Dayap, Calauan, Laguna after a long, hot pursuit.

Bongon was imprisoned at Sta Maria, Laguna on July 31, 2020 on violation of Sections 5 and Sec. 11 of RA 9165 before he was transferred to Laguna Provincial Jail on August 20, 2020. Bongon is accused of attempted homicide and robbery.

Ison said that on May 20, 2022, Bongon escaped from Laguna Provincial Jail by climbing at the tree and then jumped over the concrete fence.

The provincial jailers received information that Bongon was seen visiting his brother-in-law in barangay Bulilan Norte in Pila town.

The authorities took no time to proceed to the area where Bongon was seen.

Sensing the approaching operatives, Bongon readily boarded a motorcycle and headed for Victoria town direction.

Prison Guard Renato Molina however saw the fleeing Bongon whom he shot and hit at the back.

A hot pursuit ensued, with the Laguna Provincial Jail personnel seeking assistance of Laguna PPO which alerted nearby police stations to conduct dragnet operation.

The wounded fugitive was finally arrested and brought to Panlalawigang Pagamutan ng Laguna in Bay town for treatment.
