201,000 tourists visit Boracay in May

ILOILO CITY – More tourists visited world-famous Boracay Island last May compared to the month before.

Data released by the Malay Tourism Office Thursday, June 2, revealed that 201,368 tourists went to Boracay last month, 14,617 more than April which logged 186,751 visitors.

Majority of the arrivals in May were domestic tourists –193,298. The rest were vacationing Overseas Filipino Workers and Overseas Filipinos (3,802) and foreign tourists (4,268).

The numbers for April and May surpassed Boracay’s pre-pandemic records and signaled the normalization of the tourism industry in the country’s tourism crown jewel.

Prior to the lockdown in March 2020, 167,070 tourists visited Boracay last January 2020 or less than two months before travel restrictions were put in place.

More tourists are expected to flock to Boracay after the gateway of Kalibo International Airport has been given the go signal to operate 24/7. This would also signal the return of direct international flights.
