ZAMBOANGA CITY — A welder was killed while four others, including two engineers, were injured when a transformer of a newly-built hospital exploded on Sunday (May 22) in Zamboanga City.

A report from the Police Regional Office-9 said that the fatality was identified as Toto Rodrigo of Barangay San Roque here.

The four injured workers were identified as Engr. Jose Enriquez Bartolome, 24, of Pasobolong; Engr. Archie Hiya y Alad, 23, of Talon Talon; Santiago Conde, 40, foreman; and Samson Antohado Etteng, 49, a welder.

The victims are employees of JS Engineering Contractors.

The PRO-9 report said the victims were repairing the three-phase transformer of the newly-constructed Ace Medical Center along Alfaro Street in Barangay Tetuan when the explosion occurred at around 2:40 p.m.

Police said the welding could have caused the liquid substance to overheat, leading to the blast.

Rodrigo died after he was hit hard and fatally wounded by the blast while the other victims were injured by shrapnel and debris.

Zamboanga police are still investigating the incident.
