Tom Cruise and the cast of “Top Gun: Maverick” received a five-minute standing ovation after the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Cruise, a three-time Oscar nominee, also received a surprise Palme d’Or, after the showing of the film. In commemoration of “Top Gun: Maverick,” French fighter jets took off in the sky, releasing blue, white, and red smokes.

The squadron did another round in the air before the cast entered the Palais stage. Cruise gave his gratitude to the people who supported him throughout making the film.

“Thank you Paramount people, this was a dream to be here with you,” said Cruise. “I’m going to take this all in, and I’m never going to forget this evening.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is set to premiere in Philippine cinemas on May 25. (Carissa Alcantara)
