Lady booters take semis spot after Vietnam rout of Cambodia

The national women’s football confirmed its place in the semifinals of the 31st Southeast Asian Games following host Vietnam’s 7-0 win over Cambodia Saturday, May 14 at the Cam Pha Stadium in Quang Ninh.

Vietnam pulled away after scoring six in the second half to end its Group A campaign by winning all two matches, including its 2-1 mastery of the Philippines a few days ago.

Coach Alen Stajcic’s side finished second in the group with three points which it produced during the 5-0 thumping of Cambodia last May 9.

The Filipinas will face the top team in Group B in the semifinals slated Wednesday, still in Quang Ninh.

Thailand, Myanmar and Singapore were disputing as of posting time the two semifinal seats in Group B.

Myanmar was facing Singapore while Thailand took on Laos in the final matchday of the group stage.

It was Thailand which the Philippines defeated 1-0 last January to begin its dream run in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup which led to a historic berth to next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Pinay booters, on the other hand, were denied a bronze medal finish by Myanmar during their consolation match in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila.
