American dies in paragliding accident in Cebu

CEBU CITY -- A 63-year-old American national died in a glider crash in Oslob town, southern Cebu on Sunday.

The fatality was identified as Peter Clifford Humes.

Police said the victim was the education and safety director of the Paraglide Tandem International, which is based in Ocean City, New Jersey, USA.

Col. Engelbert Soriano, director of the Cebu Police Provincial Office, said investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the crash.

Soriano said an autopsy would be needed to determine if there was foul play involved but investigators are still awaiting approval from the victim’s family.

Soriano said that as a paragliding expert, the American was in Oslob to assess the available equipment and determine if there was a need for an upgrade of the town’s paragliding facility.

At around 10 a.m., the American went to a paragliding spot in Sitio Canan-aw, Barangay Poblacion.

The American went on to paraglide but nosedived shortly after taking off. The American crashed from about 70 feet from the ground, police said.

The American was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead by attending doctors.

Soriano said the weather was bad during the incident and that it may have contributed to the crash.
