Nievarez settles for bronze as PH rowing team misses gold medal

Joanie Delgaco won a silver while Tokyo Olympian Cris Nievarez and the duo of Edgar Ilas and Zuriel Sumintac settled for bronze medals as the Philippine Rowing Team closed out their 31st Southeast Asian Games campaign on Saturday, May 14 at the Thuy Nguyen Boat Racing Center.

The gold remained elusive for the PH rowers who finished the biennial meet with a total of two silvers and six bronzes. The haul, however, pales in comparison to the 2019 edition when the nationals only bagged four medals but struck three golds along with one bronze.

Nievarez, the country’s best bet for a possible gold in rowing, settled for the bronze medal after finishing the race in seven minutes and 35 seconds, 10 seconds behind gold medalist Ihram from Indonesia (7:25.15).

Van Hoan Bui of host Vietnam claimed silver with a time of 7:32.36.

Meanwhile, Delgaco also struck silver in the women's single sculls category while Ilas and Sumintac finished third in the men’s lightweight pair.

Nievarez still had a chance to bag a gold for the Philippine team but his team in the men’s quadruple sculls failed to land a podium finish.
