National University cruised past De La Salle in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-19, in the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Tuesday, May 10.

National University celebrates after scoring a point against De La Salle in the UAAP Season 94

The Lady Bulldogs have joined the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons atop the standings with perfect 3-0 records while the Lady Spikers sustained their first loss of the season with a 2-1 slate

Alyssa Solomon, Michaela Belen, and team captain Princess Robles proved to be too much for De La Salle as the trio combined for 39 out of their 75 points.

Solomon hit 10 spikes and scored thrice in the service area for 14 points, Belen added 13 points on top of four service aces, while Robles scored 12 points off 10 attacks for NU.

“Nag-stick lang kami sa game plan namin then ‘yong mga bata na-execute nila nang maayos ‘yong game plan and in-enjoy lang ‘yong game,” said Lady Bulldogs head coach Karl Dimaculangan. “Na-execute namin din pati ‘yong pattern namin sa defense so naging effective siya against La Salle.”

After making quick work of De La Salle in the second set, NU rode on momentum and led by four points only down the stretch at 20-16.

The Lady Bulldogs, however, made sure that there won’t be any extension after reaching match point first off a Chinnie Arroyo service ace, 24-18.

Arroyo’s next serve went too wide in the ensuing play before De La Salle’s Alleiah Malaluan, in a long and nail-biting rally, committed a costly attack error that handed NU the win.

Malaluan was the lone Lady Spiker to reach double-digits with 10 markers all coming from attacks while Jolina Dela Cruz chipped in six spikes and two blocks for eight markers.
