BI nabs '5/6' Indian money lender

Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents have arrested an Indian national allegedly engaged in lending money at excessive interest rates in Silang, Cavite.

Immigration intelligence chief Fortunato Manahan, Jr. said 48-year-old Bahg Singh was collared inside a variety store collecting the interest on the loan made by the owner.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente ordered the arrest of the alien after receiving formal complaints that Singh was engaged in usurious lending racket, commonly referred as 5/6.

He was also described as "violent always drunk, undocumented and overstaying."

Morente appealed to the public to report foreign nationals engaged in illegal activities in their community.

"Reporting illegal aliens in your area would allow our intelligence agents to initiate an investigation against them,” said Morente.

He said the bureau will remain relentless in the drive to deport undesirable foreign nationals.

Singh is held at the BI’s detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig City pending deportation.
