One killed, five wounded in Basilan shooting incident


ZAMBOANGA CITY - A male voter was killed while five others were wounded after they were fired upon by still unidentified suspects after casting their votes in Tapiantana Island, Tabuan-Lasa, Basilan on Monday, May 9.

The fatality was identified as Ricardo Fabian, a resident of Zamboanga City.

Wounded in the gun attack were identified as Andy Reyes, Nurrudin Gadjali, Alnasri Jammang, Hakim Munib, and Bol Madjalis. They were brought to the Lanawan Regional Health Unit for treatment.

A police report said unidentified armed men fired at the victims who were on the shoreline.

The shooting incident happened after the visit of the Philippine National Police Provincial Director P/Col. Pedro Martirez Jr. in the area.

A police source said Muktar Junaid, the husband of Mayor Brenda Junaid of Tabuan-Lasa, was in the area when the shooting happened.

Authorities, however, could not formally link the incident to the presence of Junaid and are still investigating the incident.
