Magnitude 5.7 quake jolts Davao Oriental - Phivolcs


An earthquake with a magnitude measuring 5.7 hit Davao Oriental around 5:41 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Thursday, May 5.

This earthquake was previously reported with a magnitude of 6.2, but the Institute downgraded it to 5.7.

The epicenter of the quake was traced 136 kilometers (km) southeast of Tarragona, Davao Oriental. Phivolcs likewise disclosed that it was tectonic in origin, indicating that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

The earthquake was “slightly felt” in General Santos City at intensity II.

Meanwhile, instrumental intensity III was recorded in Malungon and Abel Sarangani; instrumental intensity II in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Davao City; Tupi, South Cotabato; Koronadal City; and instrumental intensity I in Malaybalay, Bukidnon; Kidapawan CIty; Kiamba, Sarangani; Santo Niño and T’boli South Cotabato.

Phivolcs warned that aftershocks may occur due to this quake.
