PH tennis bets win doubles titles abroad

Treat Huey, Ruben Gonzales and Francis Casey Alcantara bolstered their Southeast Asian Games preparations after capturing doubles crowns in their respective tournaments in the United States and Egypt over the weekend.

Huey and Gonzales, who won the doubles silver in the 2019 SEAG edition, reigned supreme in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Savannah Challenger in Georgia while Alcantara teamed up with Colin Sinclair of the Northern Marianas Islands to rule the M15 Cairo International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament in Egypt.

Huey and Gonzales escaped a close opening set to survive Chinese Taipei’s Wu Tung-Lin and China’s Zhang Zhizhen, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the 16-pair clay court event.

Prior to their title win, they edged Americans Robert Galloway and Jackson Withrow , 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-7; United States’ Jamie Cerretani and South Africa’s Ruan Roelofse, 6-2, 7-5; and Americans Alex Lawson and Reese Stadler, 6-1, 6-3.

Alcantara and Sinclair, for their part, took down Denis Klok and Ilya Rudlukov, 6-3, 6-3, for the title.

The duo hardly broke a sweat throughout the tournament as they swept Marco Miceli and Ignacio Monzon, 6-1, 6-2; Andrey Chepelev and Vladislav Ivanov, 6-3, 6-4; and Max Bnaim and Alejandro Alvarez, 6-3, 6-2, en route to the crown.

The three Filipino bets are expected to join the PH squad in the coming days as they gear up for the SEAG in Hanoi, Vietnam slated next week.

Tennis competitions are scheduled from May 13 to 21.
