'Agaton' death toll balloons to 121 as more bodies retrieved in Leyte


The death toll from the onslaught of tropical depression "Agaton" ballooned to 121 on Thursday, April 14, as more cadavers were retrieved from the landslide-hit areas of Baybay City andf the town of Abuyog in Leyte.

In Baybay City alone, a total of 81 people were reported to have died of the massive landslides that hit several residential areas, according to the report of the Police Regional Office 8.

The same situation occurred in some residential areas in Abuyog town where police said a total of 31 bodies have been so far retrieved from the landslide sites.

A 74-year old man, on the other hand, died of drowning in Motiong, Samar.

In Cebu, two people were reported dead-- one in Oslob town who was buried in a landslide and another in Camotes Island who was also a victim of landslide.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), on the other hand, earlier reported the death of three people in Negros Oriental, two in Davao de Oro and one from Davao Oriental.

A total of six people--five from Eastern Visayas and one from Davao de Oro--were reported missing while 236 were reported injured, mostly due to landslides in Eastern Visayas.

And as the weather improved, the number of evacuees in Eastern Visayas has been decreasing. The latest report disclosed that a total of 1,550 families composed of 6,55 individuals are still in various evacuation centers in the region.

At least 41 barangays in Eastern Visayas were flooded at the height of "Agaton" while the power supply in 192 areas was cut.
