Scottie Thompson is delighted to be among those being considered for the Best Player of the Conference award, but insisted that giving Barangay Ginebra San Miguel another PBA Governors’ Cup crown is his top priority as of the moment.
Thompson appeared to have cleared the last hurdle in his bid to bag the BPC plum after jumping to second behind NorthPort’s Robert Bolick in the statistical points race through the end of the semifinals.
Bolick’s failure to give the Batang Pier a quarterfinals berth and Thompson’s big performance in the playoffs will weigh heavily as members of the media, players and the PBA Commissioner’s Office begin the process of voting their BPC winner.
But Thompson offered to think more on team goals as the Gin Kings hope to continue their mastery over the Meralco Bolts.
“Sa ngayon, focused muna ako dito sa finals kasi mas importante to para sa team,” said Thompson in the pre-finals press conference held Monday, April 4 at Novotel Manila in Cubao.
“Personally, happy ako na nakasama ako sa pinagpipilian, pero for now dito muna ako sa finals magfofocus,” he added.
Thompson has produced 13.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.1 steals this conference, numbers which increased after a series of double-double performances against TNT in the quarters and NLEX in the semis.
He will come into the finals facing almost the same Meralco roster which he handed a heartbreaking defeat during the semis of the 2020 Philippine Cup when his three-pointer in the final second gave Ginebra a dramatic Game 5 win inside the bubble.
