Misamis Occ. mayoralty bet survives assassination attempt

Police are now conducting investigation on the assassination attempt on a mayoral candidate in Calamba town, Misamis Occidental.

Gen. Dionardo Carlos, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said George Matunog Jr. survived the gun attack on Sunday, March 13, in Barangay Southwestern Poblacion in Calamba town.

“Our police personnel immediately conducted a hot pursuit operation to search for the gunman who, according to witness’ account, was wearing a yellow jacket at that moment,” said Carlos.

Matunog was walking towards his residence from a convenience store when a motor-riding assailant suddenly stopped and shot the victim. He was hit on the right cheek.

He was immediately brought to Calamba District Hospital for immediate medical treatment.

"While it’s early to conclude that this is politically-motivated, the PNP includes politics as a possible motive considering that the victim is a poll bet," said Carlos.
