CEBU CITY — Several cycling groups on Monday, March 14, participated in the “1-4 Alan Cayetano Bike Caravan” to show support for the senatorial bid of former Senator and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano.

“I hope activity like this will be done in other areas in the country. It is eco-friendly and fun-filled,” said Rowil Gelay, team leader of Sugbo Bike Lanes, one of the groups that participated in the caravan that started and ended at the Plaza Independencia.

Similar caravans have been held in Vigan City, San Vicente and Sta. Catalina in Ilocos Sur, Urdaneta City in Pangasinan, Daraga and Legazpi City in Albay, Ormoc City in Leyte, Baguio City, Bacolod City, Cagayan de Oro City, General Santos City, Zamboanga City, Manila City, Marikina City and several towns in Iloilo and Camarines Sur.

The holding of the series of bike caravans was in response to Cayetano’s advocacy to launch an eco-friendly campaign for the upcoming elections.

According to the participating groups, Cayetano is shunning the holding of motorcade to prevent wasting fuel and causing pollution.

Cayetano has also urged his supporters to plant mangroves, put up urban farms and use social media as an alternative campaign tool.

As a senatorial candidate, Cayetano, who is among the frontrunners in recent surveys, is pushing “faith-based and values-oriented governance.”

The first-ever caravan held by cycling groups in support of Cayetano took place in Pampanga and Laguna last Feb. 28.

Areas that have hosted such caravans were the beneficiaries of Cayetano’s “Sampung Libong Pag-asa at Sari-Saring Pag-asa” that aims to help families and entrepreneurs survive the impact of the pandemic.
