DTI confers national award to Borongan City

TACLOBAN CITY - The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has awarded the City Government of Borongan as the 4th most improved component city for 2021 nationwide during the 9th Cities and Municipalities Index (CMCI) Search of Competitiveness Bureau.

DTI Regional Director Celerina Bato, who conferred the award, said CMCI is an annual ranking of Philippine cities and municipalities managed by DTi through the Regional Competitiveness Committees (RCC).

“This is a program that encourages LGUs to gather and submit data that will be used to measure the performance of the five Competitive Pillars: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, Infrastructure, Resilience, and Innovation,” Bato shared.

Borongan City is one of four LGUs awarded in Eastern Samar. It ranked 4th out of the 108 component cities and five independent component cities in the Philippines.

Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda attributed the award to the collective participation of each department under the City Government of Borongan.

"We achieved this because of team effort. For us to be recognized again, we must continue to exert the same level of effort to further improve our performance and ranking,” he urged.

Agda stressed that the award is a huge milestone for the city after being at the bottom rank for three consecutive years – rank 109th in 2018, rank 105th in 2019, and rank 104th in 2020 – before ranking 4th in 2021.

The municipalities of Allen, San Jose, and Biri in Northern Samar also made it to the Top 10 ranking of the Most Improved LGUs.

LGU Allen ranked 1st in the Most Competitive: Government Efficiency Category among the Class 5 to 6 municipalities nationwide while San Jose was recognized as second, and Biri landed 9th under the same category.

Eight other LGUs from Eastern Visayas also made it to the Top 10 list.
