ILOILO CITY— A total of 80,882 tourists visited world-famous Boracay Island in Malay town, Aklan province, last month.

Based on the data released by the Malay Tourism Office, majority of visitors were domestic tourists (80,095). There were also 434 foreign tourists.

This was after the country reopened its doors to fully vaccinated tourists last Feb. 10.

Another 353 tourists were overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) or overseas Filipinos (OFs) vacationing in the country.

While tourist arrivals were picking up, the numbers for February 2022 were not yet the highest for Boracay during the pandemic.

The highest was recorded last December 2021 when 113,596 tourists visited the country’s most famous beach destination.  But this was still far from the pre-pandemic numbers and before travel restrictions were put in place.  For instance, more than 167,070 tourists visited Boracay last January 2020.

With many places in the country under Alert Level 1 and travel restrictions have been eased, the local government and the Department of Tourism (DOT) is expecting more tourists to flock for the summer season.
