Pride of Pasig: 124 young athletes recognized by city gov’t


The Pasig City government recognized around 124 young athletes for their exemplary achievements in the field of sports and as representatives of the city in various international, regional, and local competitions on Monday morning, Feb. 14.

The event was held during the city government’s weekly flag raising ceremony at the Pasig City Hall.

For gymnastics, the athletes won six gold, two silver, and three bronze medals in the first MK Rhythmic Gymnastics International Online Competition in 2021.

The athletes who participated in arnis competitions took home four gold, three silver, and six bronze medals in the seventh Women’s Martial Arts Virtual Festival.

A total of 21 gold, 13 silver, and 32 bronze medals were won by the athletes in various taekwondo, poomsae, and speed kicking competitions in 2021.

In the second Karate Pilipinas E-Kata and E-Fantom Championship in 2021, the athletes were awarded two gold, two silver, and four bronze medals.

For the 2021 National Youth and School Chess Championship, four silver medals were won, along with a gold and a bronze medal, while two silver medals were won for the adult chess category.

Athletes who are Persons with disabilities (PWDs) garnered seven gold, three silver, and seven bronze medals for parasports in the 2021 Para Dancesports Polish Open.

The athletes and their respective coaches were given certificates of recognition and cash incentives by the city government.

The cash incentives ranged from P1,500 (for bronze medalists who competed in regional events) to P20,000 (for gold medalists who competed in international events).

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto said initiatives to strengthen the youth sports programs in the city are ongoing.

He stressed that the city government is developing efforts to increase certification of sports coaches, opening more opportunities for partnerships with private sports organizations, and intensifying training efforts, whether virtual or onsite.

“Kahit na nasa gitna tayo ng pandemya, ginawa na natin ang lahat ng ating pwede nating gawin para ipagpatuloy ang sports program...Naipagpapatuloy natin, hindi lang ‘yung training, pati ‘yung sports scholarship natin, para hindi matigil and growth and development ng ating mga kabataang atleta dito sa Pasig (Even if we are in the middle of a pandemic, we did all that we can do to continue our sports program...We were able to continue, not just the training sessions, but also the sports scholarship that will lead to further growth and development of our youth athletes in Pasig City),” Sotto added.
