Detainee escapes under uncle's watch

TACLOBAN CITY – Police are investigating the escape of a detainee of the Leyte Provincial Jail in front of the city’s hall of justice under his uncle’s watch who is a prison guard, Tuesday (January 11).

The suspect was identified as Byron Murillo, 39, a detainee of Leyte Provincial Jail, in Brgy. Kauswagan, Palo, Leyte for estafa.

Investigation disclosed that the prison guard identified as Remegio Murillo, 56, uncle of the detainee, was escorting the said detainee for a scheduled court hearing.

However, the hearing was canceled prompting them to go out and proceed to their jail service vehicle.

The live-in partner of the said detainee, named Ana Marie Gatela, 26, was waiting outside the Bulwagan ng Katrungan and allegedly requested the said prison guard to talk with the detainee.

The prison guard escorted the detainee to his live-in partner’s vehicle where the two had a conversation inside the van.

The driver of the van named Richard Cinco then went outside to talk with the prison guard. The detainee asked for the key purposely to turn on the air conditioner.

However, he drove the said vehicle and escaped instead.

While escaping, his live-in partner said she tried to stop the accused but she was punched on her lips and was left at the Eastern Visayas Medical Center about 500 meters away from the justice hall.

The getaway vehicle was abandoned at Jones Street here fronting the Filipino Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade Inc.
