The New Year is upon us. On the crystal surface of the champagne we drank on New Year’s Eve, have we seen enough of ourselves to help us kick old habits, strengthen parts of us that had been weak, turn a new leaf, hug our enemies, and keep abusive, toxic people we loved at a distance? But apparently, 2022 is a year unlike the years before because this year, we have higher hopes and our visions of a better world are larger than ourselves. This is at least what I gathered when I asked some of our leaders and idols about their fervent wishes for this New Year.

I hope that 2022 will be a much better year for Filipinos. In 2021, despite so many challenges, we made significant progress in addressing the pandemic. Vaccination rates are high, we’re able to spend more time with family and friends, have more freedom to move around, and our economy is starting to recover. I hope we will be able to sustain these gains. There is always the threat of new variants, but we have a much better chance of adapting to “shocks” when we are engaged and thinking of the welfare of everyone around us. Having said that, there’s also a lot to look forward to in 2022, so many good possibilities that lie ahead for our country. We at San Miguel are doing our best to help realize these by investing in projects and initiatives that will make people’s lives better, creating more jobs and opportunities, and doing our bit for our environment. I also believe that, as individuals, wherever we are in life, we each have great possibilities waiting for us this coming year and beyond. My most fervent hope is we all remain healthy and safe, so we can see them better, and pursue them until they become reality. —Ramon S. Ang, president and CEO, San Miguel Corporation

Right now (as of writing) I am in the midst of rescue and relief efforts after the latest typhoon. The only thing that comes to my mind is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart / Lean not on your own understanding / In all your ways acknowledge Him /And He shall direct your path.” I’m praying for our country. —Jacques Christophe Branellec, executive vice president and deputy CEO, Jewelmer

My fervent wish for 2022 is for Filipinos to bounce back from the current economic and health crisis. Let’s help rebuild our nation by engaging and supporting projects that will create more jobs, boost economic activities that are sustainable, innovative, creative, and adaptive through the times. Let’s rethink how we work and what we value. —Ben Chan, founder, Bench; CEO, Suyen Corporation

I honestly feel  that the Philippine economy is over the hump. Consumer confidence and business confidence are back, especially the latter. Bank lending is rising. My most fervent hope is that the strong economic rebound that we have experienced in the last two quarters will be sustained in 2022 and in the years to come so that we will back on our path of reducing poverty in the land. —Ben Diokno, governor, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas

Like everyone else, I wish that we could exit from the pandemic, and start rebuilding a better, safer, and happier world.—Tessie Sy-Coson, co-chairman, SM Investments, Corporation

My most fervent hope is to have the worst behind us truly! Enough is enough! —Josie Natori, founder and CEO, The Natori Company

My hope remains the same, and that is for the tourism industry to bounce back and emerge stronger from this crisis. I hope that the coming year will be full of breakthroughs and successes. I pray that we all keep on braving the tides and rising through the ashes amid all the challenges that continue to come our way.

Last month, thousands of our kababayans in the Visayas and Mindanao regions suffered devastating losses from Typhoon Odette. Throughout the trying times over the past years, we have all realized how healing comes when we share our burdens and work together towards recovery. I hope everyone continues to tap into the spirit of Bayanihan as we are a community that moves forward with progress when we all do our part in helping and supporting each other.

I pray and I hope that 2022 will be the dawn of a new era, where all Filipinos are safe—from the virus and from the effects of climate change, from fear of leaving the house and from fear of losing their home. I know we can do it and we will get there. May 2022 become happier and more meaningful with the people we love. —Berna Romulo Puyat, secretary, Department of Tourism

My hope for 2022 is that all Filipinos remain united, determined, and resilient as we finally overcome this COVID pandemic and our lives can fully go back to normal. I also hope that in 2022 we have a good, honest, and peaceful election. —Kevin Tan, CEO and vice chairman, Alliance Global, Inc.

My fervent hope for 2022 is to see the end of this COVID pandemic so that our economy can go back to normal mode, so that our lives can go back to normal. I long to work in the office, behind my desk, with my team always nearby for on-the-spot meetings.

I miss interacting with our customers on the selling floor, holding fashion shows, or sharing cultural events. Live shows cannot compare to virtual. Face-to-face interaction can never be replaced by Zoom. Shaking hands or a warm embrace or a kiss on the cheek can never be replaced by an elbow-to-elbow “bump.” —Nedy Tantoco, chair and CEO, Rustan Group of Companies
