The national karate team preparing for the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam next year hopes to get an approval from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for ba ubble training in Baguio City.
Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation, Inc. president Richard Lim said they have already submitted their request for the bubble training of the team to the government sports agency.
“We’re still waiting for the go signal,” said Lim in a message exchange with Manila Bulletin Thursday, September 9.
“We really need to do face to face training because we have the world championships in November and athletes are already demoralized and frustrated,” added Lim.
“It’s been a year and a half that they have not trained with a partner.”
In their request to the PSC, Lim said that around 15 athletes and five members of coaching staff would train in Baguio City. The sports agency has already allotted a budget for the training as the country prepares to defend the overall title in the SEA Games.
PSC commissioner and Vietnam SEA Games Philippine Team Chef de Mission Ramon Fernandez said that karate and five other national sports associations are expected to ask for approval for bubble training.
This is after the PSC approved the request of the Philippine Fencing Association, which will start next week in Ormoc City.
Vietnam was supposed to stage the SEA Games on Nov. 21 to Dec. 2 but because of the COVID-19 situation, the host’s organizing committee has decided to reschedule the meet next year.
However, the host country has yet to announce the exact date of the SEE Games, although there is speculation it will push through either in March or April to avoid conflict and give athletes enough time to rest and prepare for the 2022 Asian Games in September in Hangzhou, China.
In the last SEA Games here in 2019, karate won two gold medals courtesy of Filipino-Japanese Junna Tsukii (-50kg) and Jamie Lim(-61kg) in women’s kumite category.
The national team also bagged one silver medal and nine bronzes.
Meanwhile, the 2021 World Karate Championships will be played November 16 to 21 in Dubai. Tsukii, who recently won her second gold medal in the Premier League in Cairo, is expected to lead the country’s campaign.
