Key hospital in COVID-19 fight gets a lot of attention from DPWH

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) continues to increase the Lung Center of the Philippines' capacity for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients, and for good reason.

DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar said in a statement Sunday, June 6 that the Task Force to Facilitate Augmentation of Health Facilities is fast tracking the ongoing construction of five cluster units of modular hospital facilitities for moderate to severe and critical cases of COVID-19 at the Lung Center compound in Quezon City.

Of the five units, three will have a total of 66 rooms intended for COVID-19 patients. These are targeted for completion this June, while the remaining two cluster units will be delivered in July.

The DPWH will also complete in July a 16-room dormitory equipped with double decker beds that will be used as sleeping quarters for the 32 healthcare workers of the medical center.

Undersecretary and Task Force Head Emil K. Sadain said that the project at the Lung Center is extremely significant since the particular hospital receives the most number of patients with respiratory conditions. The new coronavirus mainly attacks the individual's respiratory system.

Sadain led an inspection of the construction of the temporary health facilities Saturday, June 5.

The management of Lung Center plans to use one cluster unit with 22 beds as an additional intensive care unit (ICU), while the four cluster units with 88 beds is designed to house a typical hospital facility.
