Dagupan City's heat index soars to 'dangerous' 46°C

Fourteen monitoring stations registered "dangerous" heat index values on Wednesday, May 5, due to the prevalence of the warm and humid easterly winds.

The following monitoring stations on Wednesday recorded the highest heat index values, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Dagupan City, Pangasinan (46 degrees Celsius)

El Salvador, Misamis Oriental (45°C)

Sangley Pt. Cavite (45°C)

Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (44°C)

Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (43°C)

San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (43°C)

Ambulong, Batangas (42°C)

Catbalogan, Western Samar (42°C)

Clark Airport, Pampanga (42°C)

Davao City, Davao del Sur (42°C)

Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (42°C)

Tacloban City, Leyte (42°C)

Mactan International Airport, Cebu (41°C)

NAIA, Pasay City (41°C)

A heat index between 41℃ and 54℃ is under what the PAGASA considers as "danger" level due to the high likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

As of May 3, the top five stations with the highest heat index values so far in 2021 were in Dagupan City, Pangasinan (49°C, April 6); Sangley Point, Cavite (48°C, March 18); Port Area, Manila (48°C, March 19); Infanta, Quezon (48°C, April 2); and Ambulong, Batangas (46°C, April 1).

PAGASA defines heat index as the human discomfort index that gives the "apparent" temperature or what a human perceives or feels as the temperature affects the body.

It is at least 3°C to 4°C higher than the actual air temperature.

PAGASA said most parts of the country may still experience hot weather in the next few days due to the prevalence of easterlies or warm and humid winds originating from the Pacific Ocean.

Meanwhile, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), or the region where the trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani in the next 24 hours.
