BuCor has 14 active COVID cases; 1 inmate, 1 employee in hospital

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has 14 active cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections as of April 13.

Of the 14 cases, two of them – an inmate and an employee – are hospitalized while the rest are personnel who are in self-quarantine and on the way to recovery, BuCor Deputy Director General Gabriel P. Chaclag said on Thursday, April 15.

Those in the hospital are an inmate of the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) and a personnel of the Leyte Regional Prison.

Their infections were determined after they were subjected to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests, Chaclag said.

He admitted that based on rapid antigen tests, there are more persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and personnel who have the coronavirus.

“We have over a hundred trainees and over a hundred PDLs who are rapid antigen positive. All asymptomatic and have been isolated for more than a week already,” he said.

Citing BuCor’s records, Chaclag said that as of April 14, there are 175 PDLs, 161 trainees, and 32 personnel who tested positive for COVID-19 after undergoing rapid antigen tests.

“They are tested weekly using rapid antigen and if negative, they go back to routine job or old places,” he said.

He pointed out that BuCor is confident that its health service “is handling well our COVID-19 situation.”

But, he said, “medyo konti na lang kami sa rapid antigen (Our rapid antigen supply is starting to dwindle) so we are again looking for partners who want to donate while we are in the process of procuring additional rapid antigen test kits,” he added.
