PH's 'Mindanao,' Korea's 'The Man Standing Next' qualify for consideration at Oscars
Filipino film “Mindanao” and the Korean movie “The Man Standing Next” have been chosen as among 93 entries eligible for consideration in the International Feature Film category for the 93rd Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the feature films eligible to be considered in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and International Feature Film categories for this year’s Oscars that will be held on April 25.
AMPAS said 93 countries submitted entries for the International Feature Film category, formerly Best Foreign Language Film.
“Mindanao” is headlined by Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon while Lee Byung-hun stars in “The Man Standing Next.”
The Academy defined an international feature film “as a feature-length motion picture (more than 40 minutes) produced outside the United States with a predominantly (more than 50 percent) non-English dialogue track.”
This year, Lesotho, Sudan and Suriname became first-time entrants. The Board of Governors of AMPAS earlier decided to expand the shortlist to 15 from 10.
The shortlist will be announced on Feb. 9 and the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on March 15.
