Fire destroys 300 market stalls in Iloilo town

ILOILO CITY — A major fire destroyed more or less 300 stalls at the main market of Oton town, Iloilo province.

Oton Municipal Administrator Japhet Salinas said 80 percent or even 90 percent of the market has been destroyed or damaged.

Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP-Iloilo) has pegged the fire damage at a minimum of P30 million. Affected were grocery stores, fruit stalls, rice stalls, hardware stores, and food eateries.

Based on an initial report from BFP-Iloilo, the fire the started past 11 p.m. of Sunday, December 19.

Initial reports indicate that the fire started in the middle section of the market and quickly spread.

Firefighters had a hard time going in since the main entrance of the market was engulfed by the blaze and the alternative entrance and exit points of the market were also closed.

BFP-Iloilo has yet to release information as to what the cause of the fire was.

Meanwhile, Salinas said that Mayor Carina Flores has met with the market vendors to discuss possible assistance.
