Rimowa opens flagship store in Manila

Rimowa has just debuted its flagship store in the Philippines.

It’s a welcome move—and timely now that the world is reopening after nearly two years of lockdowns and travel bans. It’s an old brand from Cologne, Germany, a heritage brand established in 1898 as a small venture named Görtz & Morszeck, after its founders Paul Morszeck and Heinrich Görtz. In two years, however, Heinrich left the company, leaving Paul to grow it as a family-run business. Having put quality and innovation at its core from the beginning, when already it had distinguished itself for crafting cases in hardwearing and but lightly constructed wood, it remains a go-to brand for people in need of functional tools for their serious travels.

In 1931, Paul’s son, Richard Morszeck, joined his father’s company, renaming it Rimowa as an acronym for Richard Morszeck Warenzeichen, Warenzeichen meaning trademark. Richard also changed the course of history when, in 1937, as an homage to the early days of aviation and the first all-metal aircraft developed, Rimowa shifted from vintage wood to aviation-inspired aluminium, revolutionizing the industry with its now iconic grooved aluminium design. But that’s not enough. In 2000, having made a leap from wood to aluminium, the brand took yet another leap with the debut of the first polycarbonate suitcase.

Now under LVMH, which it joined in 2017, Rimowa has become a cult mobility brand that is more than about suitcases. In 2020, it launched Never Still, a collection of everyday bags as a mark of its evolution. Now, as then, since it started, the brand always finds a way to incorporate the latest technology in its long history of craftsmanship.

In 1937, as an homage to the early days of aviation and the first all-metal aircraft developed, Rimowa shifted from vintage wood to aviation-inspired aluminium, revolutionizing the industry with its now iconic grooved aluminium design.

More than made in precision-driven Germany, Rimowa is designed and engineered there and, as a leader in premium luggage, it has made its way around the world, as well as across Asia, where it has been recognized for its discerning travel solutions and its serious yet stylish style.

Now it’s here. Rimowa’s newest store brings its iconic designs, along with its exciting collaborations and seasonal pieces, to the center of Manila, the premier business district of Makati City, within a luxurious development known as the Greenbelt Compound teeming with restaurants, entertainment venues, retail, and housing.

Exclusively available at the store to celebrate its opening is the Rimowa Personal in a limited-edition shade of bamboo inspired by the exotic produce found in Thailand’s floating markets.

The flagship, in an ode to the material used by the brand on its signature ridged suitcases, has its storefront flanked by two large aluminium panels, leading into the interiors in a warm beige tone with accents that give the illusion of shiny metal surfaces. The textural details and the curves and lines of the interior design make viewing the collections, not to mention choosing from the range, a delightful but calming experience that, especially the wall displaying a variety of travel stickers, also inspires wanderlust. There is an in-store client care counter with an on-site technician to handle repairs.

The Rimowa store, open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, at Unit13 G/F, Greenbelt3, Esperanza Street, Makati City, Philippines. Call +63917 587 4036. Rimowa.com
