Pantone Color Institute announces Very Peri, Pantone 17-3938, as its pick for Color of the Year 2022. What makes this decision unique in its 22-year legacy in forecasting a prime hue is that it is its first time to create a new color to banner a year.

“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.” says Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us.”

Presenting a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone, Very Peri is described as “a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through.” The color mirrors elements of modern life, the virtual world, and the sense of new, giving a nod to the rising trends “in gaming, the expanding popularity of the metaverse, and rising artistic community in the digital space.”

“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone Color Institute. “Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

For more than two decades, Pantone Color Institute with its group of experts look into various fields, from the entertainment industry, arts, and fashion world to new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions, in naming its Color of the Year. Through the years, this prediction has “influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design.”
