Longtime assistant Charles Tiu will now call the shots for the College of St. Benilde Blazers in the upcoming National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 97.

The CSB’s Center for Sports Development made the announcement on Thursday, Dec 2.

Tiu will be taking the place vacated by former CSB head tactician TY Tang who left the team after he and his family migrated to Canada last September.

Tiu isn’t particularly new to the Blazers having served the team as Tang’s deputy since 2016. Tiu was even with the team when CSB came close of ending its two-decade Final Four drought when the team finished fifth with a 9-9 record in Season 95.

The new Blazers head coach is bringing in vast experience as a coach in the amateurs both locally and in the international level. Tiu won a championship in the 2019 Jones Cup and the 2020 Dubai International Basketball Championship as head coach of Mighty Sports.

Tiu has also served for Gilas Pilipinas as deputy to former national team head coach Rajko Toroman and also became part of Barako Bull Energy coaching staff when the Serbian coach served as the team’s consultant in 2013.

He recently held the head coaching job for the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League before moving as team consultant post in time for the MPBL Invitational. Tiu is also an assistant to Meralco Bolts head coach Norman Black in the PBA.

Tiu will have Carlo Tan, Paolo Layug, and Howie Chang as his staff and will handle the likes of Justin Gutang, Will Gozum, Jimboy Pasturan and Migs Oczon.
